Local 96-Year Old Artist SylvIa Cooper to be Featured at Exhibit of artworks by the partially-sighted
“Feel-Sighted” Exhibit invites guests to do what other galleries won’t allow: to experience art through touch instead of their eyes
SANTA MONICA, CA – Local artist Sylvia Cooper whose vision has been severely impaired due to macular degeneration is one of several partially-sighted artists exhibiting their works in “Feel-Sighted” – a group exhibit where guests are invited to touch the art in order to experience the work in the same ways as those who created it.
“This is an incredible opportunity for everyone to experience art in a way that most museums won’t allow – through the touch and feel of the artist,” said LaDonna Ringering, executive director of the Center for the Partially Sighted. “These artists are perfect examples of how you can lead independent and productive lives even if you are afflicted with low vision.”
Approximately 14 million Americans of all ages have low-vision that cannot be restored through medicine, surgery or regular glasses. Through the programs and services offered by organizations like the Center for the Partially Sighted, those living with low-vision are given the skills, support and services needed to live independent and productive lives.
Although she can no longer drive or read, Sylvia Cooper’s vision loss has not prevented her from creating her art. Like Michelangelo who saw “the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free,” Cooper relies on her alabaster to “reveal itself” to her.
“I’m so pleased to be involved in this unique art exhibition,” said Cooper. “This not only allows us to display incredible works of art, but the public is able to experience art in a whole new way – from the perspective of those who have limited or no sight.”
Sylvia Cooper and her husband of 75 years, Frank, will be attending the opening reception and media night on August 18, 2011.
A portion of the proceeds from “Feel-Sighted” will be donated to The Center for the Partially Sighted, an L.A.-based non-profit organization recognized as one of the premier low-vision rehabilitation centers in the world. www.low-vision.org
