Optometric Services

Doctor and Patient Our low vision doctors help people with impaired sight use their remaining sight more effectively. By performing a low vision examination, also called a functional vision assessment, our doctors evaluate how you use your remaining sight in performing daily living tasks. Based on this exam, our optometrists can prescribe the latest customized low vision device or demonstrate technology that can help you make the most of your remaining sight.

Conditions and Symptoms

Macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, glaucoma, optic nerve atrophy, retinal detachment, vision loss due to stroke are some of the conditions that respond to our low vision rehabilitation services.

If you have any of the following symptoms - even with your current glasses - a low vision optometrist can help.

Difficulty reading small print
Blurred distance vision
Sensitivity to glare
Poor night vision
Difficulty performing daily activities such as walking, cooking
Trouble with driving

Low Vision Aids

With the proper devices and training in their use, many individuals are able to continue working, taking public transportation, cooking, sewing, and, in some cases, they may even continue driving. Low vision aids fall into two major categories: optical and prescribed devices and electronic aids.

Optical and Prescribed Devices

Distance Viewing Devices: Binocular Telescopes, Telescopes, Mounted Telescopes. Reading Devices: Magnifying Glasses, Mounted Loupes, Reading Telescopes. Magnifiers: Illuminated Hand Magnifier, Hand Magnifier, Illuminated Stand Magnifier

Electronic Aids

Computer Magnification Software, Patient using a hand-held camera, Patient using a CCTV, Patient Using a head-mounted camera

Built-in adjustments in many computer programs allow some people with impaired sight to see the computer screen more easily. Making simple changes, such as adjusting the size of the type on the screen, the font style or the contrast, may increase readability. Scheduling an Appointment

To schedule an appointment, please call us at 310-988-1970 or fill out our Contact Us form. If the person to be examined does not speak or read English, please advise the receptionist when you schedule the appointment. We can then have a translator available, as well as appropriate reading materials for the low vision evaluation.
